In 1970 the Beamish Museum acquired the
ownership of Beamish Hall-in the village of
Beamish-which is just off the A693
(the Chester-le Street to Stanley road.)
and began the construction of an open air
museum which is unique in England.
Built in Beamish Park, it is a collection
of common life industrial relics from the
north-east of England. A railway line, on
which runs an old L.N.E.R. "C" class
locomotive,is served by the preserved station
from Rowley(near Consett). The locomotive
hauls a train which carries passengers around
the village/museum on a line which is being
extended to cover the whole of the village.
There is a tram (circa 1925) from Gateshead
which also carries visiters around what is
now becoming a replica of a N.E.industrial
town. There are rows of houses in which
families (dressed inperiod costume) can be
seen LIVING, EATING and PLAYING as in days
gone by. Also to be seen is a Public House, a
General Store and a Printers. A Coalmine,
in which it is possible to go underground,
has been reopened, the Farm has been restored
and there is a collection of old transport
that includes horse-drawn vehicles, steam
engines, trams, buses and cars.
